Do you know of any person who is good at numbering the hairs on your head?

In Luke 12:7, Jesus said “But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered”. It is one of those statements that Jesus made which was both profound and also humorous.

We usually comb, plait or braid our hair. But do you know of anyone who took the time and effort to number the hairs on their head? Would that really matter? Does it make a difference if our hair count was in the hundreds or the thousands?

Jewish sacrifice in the temple included shaving one’s head as a Nazarite vow and burning the hair as a sacrifice. But that hair was never counted – it was simply collected and burnt!

In the history of mankind, there never has been a single recorded event in which the number of hairs of any individual was ever counted – or documented!

It is estimated that each individual has between 100,000 to 150,000 hair follicles on their head. So what is the point that Jesus is making here?

Jesus is reminding us that while it will be a gigantic effort on anyone’s part to number their hair, it has already been determined by God, who has an on-going inventory of the number of hair that is currently there on each person’s head!

And if God is so intimately aware of our hair count, what is it in our lives that He is unaware of or does not care?

So the next time you are unsure if God cares, run your fingers through your hair and be reminded He who knows your hair count, knows everything else He needs to know about you!
