Does God value sparrows?

In Luke 12:6, Jesus said “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God”

The insignificance of a sparrow is legendary. In Jesus time, sparrows were used primarily in temple sacrifice – especially by the poor who could not afford a lamb or a bull.

God who is to be awfully feared is also revealed here as a God who cares. A God who can “cast one into hell” is also described as one who cares for the insignificant sparrow

And it is this contrast that Jesus was wanting to drive home when he highlighted the “awful fearfulness” of God – and at the same time His amazing care for the insignificant sparrow.

And in the same breath Jesus adds in the next verse “you are of more value than sparrows”. Why?

Because if this fearsome God cares so much for insignificant sparrow, His care for us is more than guaranteed!
