Whom do you fear most?
In Luke 12:5, Jesus said “But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him”.
Why did Jesus ask us to fear God, who is such a loving Father? Is not fear paralyzing? Why should we fear someone whom we love?
In the preceding verse Jesus calls his disciples “friends” and assures them that there is no need to fear anyone who can merely kill the body.
And in the same vein of talking to “friends”, in the next verse Jesus reminds them that fearing God who has the power (exousia) to cast into hell, is both appropriate and necessary.
Through this Jesus is reminding us that the Father is the ultimate Ruler of this universe who has the power to do anything He wishes. He has the power to kill. He has the power to make alive!
Because of which, He is the ONLY ONE worthy of our utmost fear and reverence!
Have you taken God lightly lately?
