Is your teaching oppressive or is it liberating to your hearers?
In Luke 11:46, Jesus told the Pharisees “What sorrow also awaits you experts in religious law! For you crush people with unbearable religious demands, and you never lift a finger to ease the burden”.
Oppressing others using God and His Scriptures has been in vogue for thousands of years. Making the Torah heavy and burdensome to obey made the Pharisee feel superior and religious.
Jesus said his “yoke is easy and His burden is light”. 2 Cor 3:17 says, “… where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty”.
Our teachings can become oppressive when we place emphasis on the letter of the law, rather than the spirit of the law”.
Will we become “experts of the law” only to oppress others? Or will we help others to experience freedom living by the “spirit of the law”?
