In 2 Sam 7:18 we read “Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?”
When God establishes the work of our hands, we can either become proud and conceited – or feel unworthy and utterly humbled.
And we see David’s response is one of utter humility when he saw God establish his kingdom.
In the same vein, we read in Luke 9:10 that Jesus quietly withdraws with His disciples to a deserted place, after the disciples experienced an amazing spiritual ministry of driving out devils and healing the sick.
Success in our spiritual ministry can make us feel God-like and super-human. Often it can make our heads spin – and we can easily become dizzy with pride!
Always withdrawing to a quiet place after experiencing success in spiritual ministry will help us recalibrate our humanity – and also restore our sense of human frailty.
Only then we like David can truly say “Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?” – and feel our utter unworthiness.
Has spiritual success puffed you up or has it made you more humble and contrite?
