Have you ever encountered the “finger of God”?
In Luke 11:20, Jesus told the Pharisees, “But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you”.
So what does this “finger of God” mean? What is its special spiritual significance? How does it apply to our lives?
In the Bible we read about the finger of God in only 3 specific instances. The first one is when God wrote the ten commandments with His finger on the 2 tablets of stone (Exo 31:18). Apparently He did not need a pen to write – His finger was sharper than any two edged-sword!
In the second instance we read how the magicians in the court of Pharaoh reacted by saying “this is the finger of God” (Exo 8:19) when they could not through their enchantments do the same miracles which Moses and Aaron performed.
In the third instance, Jesus uses the same terminology when He told the Pharisees that He “with the finger of God cast out devils” (Luke 11:15)
From these three passages we can surmise, the “finger of God” is His manifest power demonstrated in our lives which devils (and magicians) always recognize, but we may miss or take for granted!
The “finger of God” which wrote the Ten Commandments defined what a God-fearing life should be. And a God-fearing life is best lived when we resist Satan, daily in our lives.
And to resist Satan, we need the same “finger of God” that opposed the magicians in Pharaoh’s court – and the “finger of God” Jesus said He used to cast out devils.
A believer’s life in which the “finger of God” is either absent or non-existent, will be a shallow spiritual life. He will be spiritually impotent, insecure and tossed to and fro.
But whenever we seek, pursue and yearn for more of His fresh anointing and His Spirit’s power, this “finger of God” will be our portion!
And when this happens, devils will flee and the powers of darkness will be shaken. Your life thereafter have a power and punch that will cause devils to fear and obey.
And then you will say like the 70 whom Jesus sent out ” Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name” (Luke 10:17).
That is “finger of God”!!
Will we seek the “finger of God” in our lives – or rather live spiritually impotent lives?
Great point! And, there was also the Finger of God in Belshazzar’s court in Daniel 5 when God wrote, “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.”
I never thought about “the finger of God” before. Thank you!
Thanks, Tim
