What matters most to you – the letter of the law or the spirit of the law?

In Luke 6:11, we see the Pharisees filled with anger and consternation that Jesus healed the man with a withered hand on a Shabbat day.

Jesus taught that the spirit of the law was more important than the letter of law. That is why the sermon on the mount, is all about bringing out the depth and intent behind the Old testament law.

Anger is as good as murder – a look of lust is as good as adultery! Jesus was showing us the spirit of the law was what mattered.

And those who focus on the letter of the law will invariably hate those who follow the spirit of the law!
