What is the one key distinctive of a “child of the Highest”?

According to Jesus the one key distinctive of a child of the Highest is to be kind both to the “unthankful and to the evil person”.

This is so counter-intuitive to our human nature. We love to be kind to those who are good and gracious. But Jesus says when we show kindness (meaning to be gracious) to those who are evil-motived, unthankful and boorish and those whose character is repulsive, then we will be known as the children of the Highest. What a high bar He set for us!

That is why Frederick Buechner, a saintly man of God said, “If you want to be holy, first learn to be kind”

And this is only possible when we possess agape. Without agape we will always default to our “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” nature in us!
