Bibles read without prayer; sermons heard without prayer; marriages contracted without prayer; journeys undertaken without prayer; residences chosen without prayer; friendships formed without prayer; the daily act of prayer itself hurried over, or gone through without heart.
These are the kind of downward steps by which many a Christian descends to a condition of spiritual palsy, or reaches the point where God allows them to have a tremendous fall.
Will you invite God into every detail of your life – or are there some parts which are off-limits to Him?
J.C. Ryle (1816 -1900)
Pastor/Preacher/Author
Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, UK
J C Ryle was powerful preacher and convicting writer. He was also described as "a man of granite with the heart of a child". He served as an Anglican Bishop but his life and ministry was markedly different from his contemporaries. He spoke the truth fearlessly even if it differed from the conventional wisdom of the Anglican church. He was a revivalist – a "burning and a shining light" like John the Baptist (read John 5:35) who did not compromise the truth or preach a convenient gospel. May the Lord raise more such men of God today.
