What is the rat race? It is the conflict between who a man is created to be and who he is tempted to be. It is the endless pursuit of an ever-increasing prosperity that ends in frustration rather than fulfillment.
Tired, pressured, and restless – many people have a pervasive lack of contentment. The price of pace is peace. We have created a culture that requires more energy than men have to give.
How do people get caught up in the rat race? In Galatians 5:7 Paul asks the question this way: "You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?"
He teaches the answer two verses later: "A little yeast works its way through the whole batch of dough" (Galatians 5:9). A big lie has entered the mind and muddles up everything.
You and I must recognize that there is another race – what Paul calls the "good race". Perseverance in that race comes from fixing our eyes on Jesus, "the author and perfecter of our faith" (see Hebrews 12:1-3).
So which race are you running today – the rat race or the good race?
